CONTRIBUTOR INFORMATION

Content:

Infancy is the official journal of the International Society on Infant Studies. The journal is devoted to reporting a wide variety of research and theory related to infant development. Research with infant animals as well as with human infants will be considered. The emphasis is on original research articles and brief reports (3,000 words). In addition, Infancy publishes target articles with peer commentary, debates with invited commentaries, and thematic collections -- groups of three to five research-based papers from independent laboratories that address a common research topic related to infancy. Thematic collections also include invited peer commentaries. Authors of any of the foregoing types of submissions may submit additional archival material such as color photographs, sound files, Quicktime movies, and large data sets to the companion web page, Infancy Archives, that will accompany each issue of the journal.

Manuscript Submission:

Prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition, 2001). Use Word or another popular word-processing program to create an electronic file of the manuscript. Be sure to “blind” the manuscript of any identifying information about the authors and research sites (see below). We prefer to receive the blinded manuscript in PDF format because it ensures that all special symbols are formatted correctly. But if you are unable to convert your file to PDF format, simply send the Word (or other word processing) file as an attachment via email to: infancy@vt.edu. Do not submit the figures as a separate file, but rather insert them at the end of the manuscript. When a manuscript is accepted for publication, we will provide you with detailed instructions on how to format the final version and transmit it (electronic and hardcopy) to the editorial office.

In a cover letter emailed with the manuscript, the submitting author should state that the material has not been published and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. The author should also state that the research complied with American Psychological Association ethical standards in the treatment of the participants.

Blind Review:

To facilitate anonymous review, only the article title should appear on the first page of the manuscript. The submitting author should include in the covering email message the authors' names and affiliations; a copy of the Abstract; any statements of credit or research support; and mailing addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers, and e-mail addresses of the authors. The authors should make every effort to see that the manuscript itself contains no clues to their identities.

Permissions:

Authors are responsible for all statements made in their work and for obtaining permission from copyright owners to reprint or adapt a table or figure or to reprint a quotation of 500 words or more. Upon acceptance for publication, the submitting author should write to the original author(s) and the publisher(s) to request nonexclusive world rights in all languages to use the material in future editions. Provide copies of all permissions and credit lines.

Production Notes:

Upon acceptance of a manuscript the submitting author will be asked to provide a computer disk containing the unblinded manuscript file (in word-processing format). Files are copyedited and typeset into page proofs. Authors must read these proofs to correct errors and answer editors’ queries in a timely fashion to reduce publication delays.
